This is a great tale from ancient Indian mythology about a brother and sister whose love was so strong that it led to the lovely holiday of Raksha Bandhan.
Say hello to Yama and Yamuna.A long time ago, there was a brother called Yama and a sister named Yamuna. Yama was the God of Death, which sounds terrible, but he was quite fair and reasonable. Yamuna was a lovely goddess of the river who flowed over the region and gave life to all around her.
The Issue
Yama and Yamuna loved each other very much, yet they couldn't see each other very much. Yama was constantly busy with his vital business, and he hadn't seen his sister in twelve years! That's like not going to twelve birthday celebrations with your brother.
Yamuna missed her brother. She would ask the sun, the wind, and the clouds, "Have you seen my brother?" When will he come to see me?
Yamuna's Sadness
Yamuna was so sorrowful that she approached her buddy, the sacred river Ganga, for aid. She remarked, "Sister Ganga, my brother hasn't been to see me in so long." I miss him. "Can you please tell him about me?"
River Ganga felt bad for Yamuna and chose to aid her companion.
The Get-Together
River Ganga finally went to Yama and stated, "Your sister Yamuna misses you”. She has been waiting for you for twelve years. Shouldn't you go see her? Yama instantly remembered how much he had been ignoring his sister. He was remorseful and ran to meet Yamuna right away.
The Happy Meeting
Yamuna was very happy to see her brother after so many years! She made him the best dinner and put lovely flowers on her banks. She put a protective thread around Yama's wrist. This was the first rakhi!
Yama was quite touched by how much his sister loved him. He said, "I'm sorry I stayed away for so long, dear sister." Your love has moved me.
The Unique Gift
Yama was so grateful for Yamuna's love and care that he offered her a very unusual gift. He answered, "Sister, I give you immortality because you have loved me so deeply." You will always flow, giving joy and vitality to the world.
But Yama didn't stop there. He offered an even better promise: "Any brother who gets a rakhi from his loving sister and promises to keep her safe will have a long, happy life!"
The Festival Begins
This is how Raksha Bandhan was started! From that day on, brothers and sisters throughout India began to celebrate this lovely holiday. They thought about how much Yama and Yamuna loved each other and swore to always take care of each other.
What This Story Teaches Us:
- Family ties need time and care to stay strong.
- It's never too late to get back in touch with family.
- Love and forgiveness can heal any gap.
- Small acts of love, like tying a rakhi, can have a big impact.
- Brothers and sisters should never let work or distance get in the way of their relationship.
This year, when you tie a rakhi, think of Yama and Yamuna's narrative and the love that will always be there between siblings.
