Kids make colourful Diwali decorations and environmental rangolis out of things they already have and natural colours for family pleasure. The Festival of Lights, Diwali, is a great time to encourage kids to be creative and develop eco-friendly practices. This week-long guide (October 18–23) has hands-on crafts that turn trash into treasure, such as upcycled lanterns, flower-petal rangolis, grain mosaics, and clay-diyas. It will make sure your family celebration is colourful and green.
Daily Schedule: Day 1 (October 18): Lanterns made from upcycled bottles
• Get clean glass bottles.
• Use leftover acrylic paint and wrap jute string around it.
• Add LED tea lights for a safe glow.
Day 2 (October 19): Rangoli with Flower Petals
• Use chalk to outline the rangoli on the floor.
• Put marigold, rose, and hibiscus petals in it.
• After that, compost the petals.
Day 3 (October 20): Mandalas made of grains and pulses
• Use turmeric or beetroot water to colour rice.
• Make mandalas out of colored rice, lentils, and beans.
Day 4: Cardboard Toran Garland (October 21)
• Make leaf shapes out of old cereal boxes.
• Add dried orange-peel beads, paint, punch holes, and thread on rope.
Day 5 (October 22): Clay and Spice Diyas
• Shape air-dry clay into diyas.
• Add clove and cinnamon powder for smell.
• Use natural ochres to paint and food-grade oil to seal.
Day 6 (October 23): Eco Rangoli Show
• Combine colours you created yourself (rice flour, spinach, turmeric, and beetroot).
• Let them draw without using stencils or use wooden ones.
• Make photo keepsakes.
How to Succeed in Green
1. Use crushed seashells or mica instead of artificial glitter.
2. Use old newspapers as work mats to collect spillage.
3. Put any leftover natural colours in sealed jars for Holi or other crafts in the future.
Have fun making things that are good for the environment!
