When the stars were young, Luna was one of them. She lived in the big, sparkling night sky. Though there were still many bright stars in the sky, Luna's light had become dim and weak. That her weak glow made her feel bad, she hid behind the moon every night.
"Why can I not shine like everyone else?" While she watched the other stars dance and twinkle with great brightness, Luna whispered to herself. It was easy to see the North Star because it was so bright, and the constellation stars were making pretty designs that made kids on Earth happy.
Moon met Cosmo, an old and wise comet, one night as it passed through their part of the sky. "Why do you look so sad, little star?" Cosmo asked in a kind voice.
Luna told him what was wrong as tears of stardust fell from her eyes. I am not smart enough. I do not belong with those other stars. "I am just too different."
Cosmo gave a warm smile. "Dear Luna, did you know I used to feel the same way?" I am just a ball of ice and rock with a neon tail. I am not a star at all. But I learned something important: each of us has our own unique way of making the dark better.
"But how?" Luna asked in confusion.
Cosmo told Luna, "Follow me." He then led her to a quiet spot in the sky that had a view of a small town on Earth. Down below, they saw a little girl sitting by her bedroom window and being amazed by the sky.
"I wish upon that soft, gentle star," the girl said in a whisper, pointing at Luna. "It makes me think of the warm smile of my grandmother."
Moon gasped. "Why is she looking at me?"
Cosmo said, "Yes."People do not get eye strain from your soft light like they do from bright stars. Kids love to make wishes for you because you make them feel safe and good.
Luna all of a sudden started to get it. There was no need for her to shine like a star. Many people felt better when they saw her soft, warm light. She was beautiful the way she was.
Luna no longer hid behind the moon after that night. She found her special spot in the sky and smiled, filled with quiet pride and soft confidence. A lot of kids around the world would smile when they saw her light.
When Luna was not sure of herself, she thought of Cosmo's wise words and the little girl's wish. For her, being different was not something to hide; it was the best thing about her.
